Laser Hair Removal and Skin Type

Each individual’s skin has a specific response time to sun exposure in terms of the amount of time and degree to which it will tan and at what point it will burn. This information has been classified into a system referred to as The Fitzpatrick classification.

When utilizing laser to remove hair or treating veins, wrinkles, sun spots and scars you must first determine what type of skin type you have within the Fitzpatrick classification in order to determine the proper treatment.

Your skin type will be determined by the clinic to which you go to for your laser treatment however the classification consists of the following groups:
  1. Caucasian European [Fitzpatrick skin type I, II, III]
  2. Eastern Asian, American Indian [Fitzpatrick skin type IV]
  3. Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Hispanic, Afro-American [Fitzpatrick skin type V]
  4. African descent [Fitzpatrick skin type VI]
Laser Hair Removal Treatment and Pain

Most of us wonder if the procedure of zapping one’s hair follicles will be a painful one and how often this procedure will have to be performed to see the effect of the treatment.

Persons who have undergone a laser hair removal treatment describe the sensation as that of having a rubber band snapping against their skin and agree that the pain was not unbearable and less than that of waxing, that said one must remember that everyone’s pain tolerance differs and if you are particularly sensitive mention this at the clinic so that you can be prescribed a numbing cream.

The number of treatments for the hair laser removal will differ as hair has three phases of growth: anagen, catagen and telogen. The procedure is effective when hair in the anagen – the active phase are targeted and as our hair grows at different stages you may need 3 to 8 treatments at intervals of 3 to 8 weeks for the procedure to show full results.

Choosing the Right Clinic

Are You Laser Hair Removal's Type?
Laser hair removal can be a liberating process, allowing one to feel more comfortable in their own body, or just boosting over-all confidence in your appearance. Before choosing to begin the procedure you may wish to look into whether this particular treatment will be effective for you.

The process requires the laserbeam to be absorbed by specific pigments in the hair and it is often extremely effective on people with lighter skin and darker locks since that makes it easier for the laser to locate the intruding follicle. People with red hair are the least likely to find laser an effective treatment, as their hair lacks the chemical "eumelanin" which is a darkening agent the laser is trained to find. Surprisingly natural blonds carry this chemical and most of them will develop darker hair as they get older. In fact only 2% of the entire worlds adult population are true blonds.

It is possible to treat red hair with laser removal, but a program will need to be developed on a case-by-case basis. Also the laser will need to be turned down to avoid burning the skin (in its attempt to locate the eumelanin pigment), so one must plan on attending more sessions than their darker-haired counterparts in their quest for beauty.
